Ring Size Guide: How to Measure Ring Size at Home

Ring Size Guide: How to Measure Ring Size at Home

This ring size guide shows you how to find your size at home in about five minutes. You need a ring that already fits, or a strip of paper and a ruler. This guide explains both methods. It includes a ring size chart in mm with US, UK and EU sizes, and tips for wide bands, toe rings and slightly adjustable rings, so the silver ring you order fits the first time.

How to measure ring size at home

Method 1: measure a ring that already fits (most accurate)

Diagram: measure the inside diameter of a ring that fits, edge to edge, on a ruler. 17.3 mm is a US 7.

  1. Choose a ring that fits the same finger you're buying for. Your hands aren't identical, so a ring from your right hand may not fit your left.
  2. Lay it flat on a ruler and measure the inside diameter, edge to edge across the middle. Don't include the metal itself.
  3. Find that number in the Diameter (mm) column of the chart below. If you land between two sizes, choose the larger one.

Method 2: measure your finger with paper or string

Diagram: wrap a paper strip around the base of your finger, mark where it overlaps, then unroll it on a ruler. 54.3 mm is a US 7.

  1. Cut a thin strip of paper about 10 cm long and 5 mm wide. Avoid string if you can, because it stretches.
  2. Wrap it around the base of your finger. It should be snug, but still able to slide over your knuckle.
  3. Mark where the paper overlaps, then lay it flat and measure from the end to the mark in millimetres. That's your circumference.
  4. Find it in the Circumference (mm) column. Between two sizes? Go up.

Tips for an accurate measurement

  • Measure at the end of the day. Fingers are slightly larger in the evening and in warm weather, and smallest when you're cold.
  • Measure two or three times and use the average.
  • Mind the knuckle. If your knuckle is much wider than the base of your finger, choose a size that slides over the knuckle. Otherwise you won't get the ring on.
  • Wide bands fit tighter. For bands of about 6 mm and wider, go up half a size. If that puts you between two of our sizes, choose the larger one.

Ring size chart in mm and cm (US, UK, EU)

Our rings are sized in US sizes, mostly US 5 to US 10, with some styles in smaller or larger sizes. Conversions between systems are approximate, and different makers' charts vary by a fraction. If you were sized by a jeweller in another system, use the diameter or circumference in mm, which is the same everywhere.

Average ring size for women and men

The most commonly cited average ring size is US 6 to 7 for women (about 16.5–17.3 mm inside diameter) and US 8 to 10 for men (about 18.1–19.7 mm). Averages are a starting point, not a measurement. Finger size varies a lot with height, build and which finger you wear the ring on. If you're buying a gift and can't measure, borrow a ring the person already wears on that finger. Our slightly adjustable rings give a little leeway, and an unworn ring can be exchanged for another size within 14 days.

Which finger, and does it change the size?

Yes. Your thumb and middle finger are usually the largest, and your little finger the smallest. Your dominant hand is often half a size larger than the other. Measure the exact finger you plan to wear the ring on. That includes stacking rings, midi rings worn above the knuckle, and thumb rings.

Toe ring sizes

Toe rings are worn on the second toe more than any other, and most are open or adjustable, so a size chart matters less. Gently squeeze the ring to close it or ease it open until it sits snugly behind the toe joint without pinching. Adjust slowly and evenly. Repeatedly bending silver at the same point weakens it. Slightly adjustable rings: fine-tuning the fit

Many of our silver rings are slightly adjustable. Choose your size from the chart first. The small adjustment is for a perfect fit, not for changing size. Ease the band with gentle, even pressure, then leave it at that fit rather than adjusting it often. See our silver rings and men's silver rings.

Can rings be resized, and how much does it cost?

Most plain silver bands can be resized by a jeweller, usually by up to one or two sizes. They cut the band and add or remove a little silver, or stretch it slightly. The cost depends on the jeweller, the width of the band and how much the size changes. Some rings are harder or impossible to resize:

  • Patterned all the way round (hammered, stamped or braided bands): resizing breaks or stretches the pattern.
  • Set with stones all the way round, like eternity styles.
  • Very thin or very wide bands.

We don't resize rings, but we're happy to exchange an unworn ring for a different size within 14 days of delivery (see our refund policy). Please don't have a ring resized before deciding to exchange it: altered pieces can't be returned.

A ring is too loose: what are ring size adjusters?

A ring size adjuster (also called a ring guard or ring sizer insert) is a small clear coil or strip that sits inside the band to take up space. It works well for a ring that's half a size too big, or for knuckles that are wider than the base of the finger. It's a cheap fix that doesn't alter the ring.

Common mistakes when choosing a ring size

  • Measuring a ring from a different finger or hand.
  • Measuring the outside of a ring instead of the inside.
  • Using string, which stretches and gives a size too large.
  • Measuring when your hands are cold.
  • Forgetting that wide bands need half a size more.

Ring size FAQ

How can I find my ring size without a ring sizer?

Measure the inside diameter of a ring that already fits that finger, or wrap a paper strip around the base of the finger and measure the circumference. Then use the chart above.

What size ring does the average woman wear?

US 6 to 7 is the most commonly quoted range, about 16.5–17.3 mm inside diameter. Measure if you can.

What's my ring size in cm?

Use the diameter column. For example, a 1.73 cm (17.3 mm) inside diameter is about a US 7, UK N½ or EU 54.

Should I size up or down if I'm between sizes?

Size up, especially for bands wider than about 6 mm.

Can I exchange a ring if the size is wrong?

Yes. Unworn rings in their original condition can be exchanged for a different size within 14 days of delivery.
